Night Driving and Your Eyes: Why the Second Half of a Shift Is Harder

What Low Light Does to the Visual System

In bright conditions, the eye uses a combination of cone cells — specialised for colour and detail — and the natural narrowing of the pupil to maintain sharp, efficient vision. In low light, cone cells become less active, the pupil dilates to allow more light in, and the visual system shifts to a lower-resolution mode.

The result is that night vision is inherently less precise than daytime vision. The eye has to work harder to extract the same level of information from a darker environment. That effort is continuous across the entire shift.

Headlights and Contrast Shifts

One of the most demanding aspects of night driving is managing oncoming headlights. Each time a headlight passes, the visual system has to rapidly adapt from a concentrated bright source back to a darker road environment. This adaptation process — called dark adaptation — takes time. At motorway speeds, those seconds of reduced visual acuity matter.

Over the course of a shift, repeated contrast adaptation is tiring for the visual system in ways that don't have an obvious equivalent in daytime driving.

Why the Second Half Feels Different

By the midpoint of a long night shift, the meibomian glands in the eyelids have been producing less protective oil for several hours — because sustained driving focus consistently reduces blink rate. The tear film has become less stable. The eyes are working in suboptimal conditions and have been doing so for hours.

This is when the gritty feeling sets in. When focusing on road signs takes a moment longer than it should. When the halo around oncoming lights gets slightly larger and harder to ignore.
